If you want to screenshot a Snapchat message without the sender knowing, all you need is this simple trick. Despite its reputation as a "sexting" app, Snapchat remains a firm favourite among millennials, allowing them to send photos and videos that self-destruct after a fixed period of time. But although the message itself disappears, there is nothing to stop the recipient from taking a screenshot of the message before it self-destructs, in order to preserve the contents in image form.

Snapchat is wise to this tactic so, now, if you were to do this, the sender would get a notification to alert them to the fact that you had a permanent record of their message. However, if you want to be a bit more sly about it, there is a way to cheat the system and screenshot the message without notifying the sender. First you need to open the Snapchat app, so the unopened message is visible in the inbox on your screen. Then you need to put your device onto Airplane Mode, without closing the app. On an iPhone you can do this by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to pull up the menu, and then tapping the aeroplane icon.

On an Android phone you need to swipe down from to top of the screen. Once Airplane Mode is activated, return to the Snapchat app. The message should still be available to open, despite you not being connected to the internet. Once you've taken a screenshot of the picture, close the app and make sure it isn't running in the background. When you de-activate Airplane Mode and re-open the Snapchat app, the message will appear unopened, and the fact that you have taken a screenshot with remain a secret.
